Wi-Fi QR codes on iPhone

Scanning needs nothing but the Camera app. Showing your own network as a code arrived with the Passwords app in iOS 18.

Scan a Wi-Fi QR code

  1. Open the Camera app (not a third-party scanner) and point it at the code. Hold still for a second.
  2. A yellow Wi-Fi QR Code banner appears. Tap Join.
  3. Confirm the network name. Your iPhone saves it, so it rejoins automatically next time.

No banner? Go to Settings → Camera and make sure Scan QR Codes is on. You can also add the Code Scanner to Control Centre, which works in low light because it switches the torch on.

Show your iPhone's Wi-Fi as a QR code

  1. Open the Passwords app (iOS 18 or later) and tap Wi-Fi.
  2. Choose the network you're connected to.
  3. Tap Show Network QR Code. Let your guest scan the screen with any phone.

On iOS 16 and 17 you can reveal the password in Settings → Wi-Fi → ⓘ → Password, then type it into the generator to make a printable code.

iPhone to Android

Apple's "Share Password" pop-up only appears between Apple devices that have each other in Contacts. For an Android guest, show the Passwords app QR code or print one from this site. Android's camera or Google Lens reads it straight away; see the Android guide.

If it won't join

  • Network name must match exactly, including capitals and trailing spaces.
  • Security type: WPA/WPA2/WPA3 covers almost every router; "WPA3 only" is for SAE-only routers.
  • Hidden network? The code needs the hidden flag.
  • Very old iPhones on iOS 10 or earlier need a scanner app, which may not offer to join.

How do I scan a Wi-Fi QR code on an iPhone?

Open the Camera app, point it at the code and tap the "Join network" banner that appears. It works on iOS 11 and later with no extra app.

Can an iPhone show a QR code for its Wi-Fi?

Yes, from iOS 18. Open the Passwords app, tap Wi-Fi, pick the network and tap "Show Network QR Code". An Android phone or another iPhone can scan it to join.

How do I share Wi-Fi from an iPhone to an Android phone?

Use the Passwords app QR code on iOS 18 or later, or make a code on this site. Apple’s tap-to-share Wi-Fi only works between Apple devices.

Why does my iPhone say "Unable to join the network"?

Usually the password or network name in the code does not exactly match the router (check capitals and spaces), the security type is wrong, or you are out of range. Hidden networks also need the hidden option ticked.
