Wi-Fi QR code without a password

Two different questions hide behind this search: making a code for an open network, and sharing Wi-Fi without handing over your password. Here are both answers.

Open the generator

Open networks: pick "No password"

In the generator, choose No password (open). The code then holds only the network name with T:nopass, and the password field disappears. Libraries, shops and events with a captive portal (the "accept terms" page) use this.

What the code gives away

Flip between the two settings. With a password, the password sits in the code in plain text; a QR code is a way of writing text, not a lock.

Sharing Wi-Fi without your main password

  1. Turn on a guest network. Most routers have one (look in the router's app or its admin page, often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Give it a separate password. Guests never learn the password to the network your laptops and cameras use.
  3. Make the QR code for the guest network and print it. Change that password whenever you like and reprint.

An open network with no password at all is convenient but lets anyone nearby join and, without the router's "client isolation" feature, see other devices on it. For a home, a password-protected guest network is the better choice.

Can I make a Wi-Fi QR code without a password?

Yes, for an open network. Choose "No password (open)" in the generator and the code contains only the network name (T:nopass). Phones join as soon as it is scanned.

Can a Wi-Fi QR code hide the password?

Not from a determined person. The password is stored as readable text inside the code, and any scanner app can display it. What a QR code does is save guests from typing and keep the password off a whiteboard.

How do I share Wi-Fi without giving out my main password?

Turn on your router’s guest network (most routers have one in the app or admin page), give it its own password and make the QR code for that. Your main network, devices and files stay separate.

Can I connect to Wi-Fi from a QR code without knowing the password?

Yes, you only need to scan it; your phone reads the password from the code. You can still see it afterwards with our scanner or in your phone’s saved networks.
