Getting the password out of a Wi-Fi QR code

Every Wi-Fi QR code carries its password as readable text, in a line like WIFI:T:WPA;S:Home;P:correct-horse;;. Phone cameras usually hide that and just offer to join. This page shows it.

If the code is on your own phone, there is a quicker way: on iPhone, open the Passwords app (iOS 18 and later) and pick the network; on Android 10 and later, tap the network in Wi-Fi settings and choose Share. See the iPhone and Android guides.

Questions

Can I see the Wi-Fi password from a QR code?

Yes. The password is stored as plain text inside every Wi-Fi QR code (except open networks). Scan the code here, or with a camera that shows the text, and the password is displayed.

Is the image or camera feed uploaded?

No. Decoding uses a plain JavaScript QR decoder that runs in your browser. The camera feed and any image you pick never leave your device.

Why does my phone connect but not show the password?

iPhone and many Android camera apps join the network directly without displaying the password. This scanner shows it so you can type it on a laptop or TV.

The scanner can’t read my code. What now?

Fill most of the frame with the code, avoid glare, and make sure the whole code including its white border is visible. For a screenshot, crop tightly around the code and try again.
